This two-day course focuses on how to optimally train marksmanship at speed with a pistol. This course is not about tactics, although tactical application of all techniques taught will be discussed, but instead is about skill with the firearm. Your skill at shooting drives your tactics, and the ability to make a shot with precision, rapidly, and under pressure, is of paramount importance. Our goal is for every student to finish this class with a deeper understanding of how to construct their personal training in order to improve as efficiently as possible.

Topics Covered:

  • Fundamental principles of marksmanship at speed
  • Efficiency and consistency of weapons manipulation at speed
  • Movement principles for application of shooting technique
  • Technical efficiency and individual optimization of technique
  • Isolation of skills and training methodology for improvement
  • Technical experimentation in training
  • Complex drills for training skills in aggregate
  • Maximizing performance under pressure
  • Creating a feedback loop for maximizing efficiency of training

Course Prerequisites

  • Good health and a fitness level sufficient for strenuous physical activity. All our classes incorporate vigorous athletic movement.
  • All our classes require safe weapons handling at an unconsciously competent level of skill. This includes drawing from a holster, reholstering, reloads, and weapons safety during dynamic movement and under physical and mental stress. Flagrant or negligent unsafe actions will result in removal from a class without refund.

Equipment Requirements

  • Serviceable pistol of 9mm or larger caliber, minimum 3 magazines (6 for single stack guns), belt, holster and at a minimum two mag pouches capable of retaining weapon and magazines during strenuous movement. Minimum 1,000 rounds of ammunition, although more is recommended. Eye/ear protection for range. No Serpa holsters or soft nylon/leather holsters permitted in class.

Student Information

  • We send out two student emails for every class. You will receive one email approximately two weeks before the class date containing waivers, student information, range location, and amount of range fees where applicable. Please complete the waiver in a timely fashion, this helps us greatly for the class. You’ll receive a follow-up email the week of the class. If you don’t receive the first email, please check your spam folder. The emails will come from alittle@greybeardactual.com.

    Great class...

Especially good was the emphasis on the how-to of self-coaching, making better use of time and ammo.

Matt's Pistol Skill Development class is a must for both defensive and competitive shooters! Matt understands his material deeply enough that he not only presents a method, but is able to articulate why it works as well as how it is applicable to both a defensive and a competitive shooter.

Matt's course is laid out in a manner that makes sense, conveying a wealth of information without "firehosing" it at you and hoping some sticks, you're able learn from all of it. Matt doesn't sugar coat it, it will be a lot of work but you will take with you the ability to establish a training path that is going to be effective at improving your pistol shooting abilities!

Thank you again Matt and Angela for putting on the class, and LHGK for hosting it!

This course will take you to the next level!

I recently attended this course at LHGK in Iowa and I would recommend this to anyone who takes their shooting seriously and wants to learn how to train more efficiently, deliberately, and effectively. Matt leverages his extensive experience across multiple shooting disciplines and teaches methodologies that students will be able to take home and apply to their own training. Regardless if you are a competitor, armed citizen, or if you carry a gun professionally, there is something to be gained in this course. Matt treats skills development with a systems approach that builds on existing proficiencies, isolates areas for improvement, integrates skills through combination drills, and tests your development. Data driven training is emphasized throughout the course and Matt really fosters the idea of shooters as thinkers. I will definitely be training with Greybeard again!

    Robust training with great lessons!

This training was a great course that really opened up my mindset to improve my pistol shooting! I have struggled with my shooting under pressure, this course really gave me a great start on a training path to fix my deficiencies with speed shooting. Matt and Angela both were so helpful and excellent and getting us to think outside the typical box you find in shooting classes. Overall a great investment, worth every penny plus some!

    Pistol Skill Development

This was the first formal firearms training I’ve had outside the academy on my own dime and time. I found it extremely valuable not only for what I learned in the actual class, but how I would apply Matt’s philosophy of training while shooting and training on my own. This class is great for both competitors and professional gun handlers as Matt has reached extremely high levels in both competition and combat. Well worth the money and I’m looking forward to taking another class with Matt.

A great way to add to your training

I really like Matt's approach to training. He not only talks about implementing ways to improve, Matt shows you how to do it, then coaches you through the various drills he does to increase your efficiency and tactics for the situation.

I have already applied his ideas and the USPSA match I shot the weekend after his class resulted in an increase of 20% overall.

    Highly recommended!

    A better approach to training

Posted by Dave on 19th Apr 2019

This class also goes over, in great detail, how to build lasting skill through self-diagnosis and a performance/athletic based methodology versus 'just shot a lot more and you'll get better'. This is an excellent course in seeing what works and what doesn't for you working both speed & accuracy while allowing yourself to fail in training so that you can see where your own limits are and where you need to start in order to improve your own skill set. I would recommend this course to anyone who has an understanding of their equipment and firearm and would like to learn how to get themselves to the next level.

Most amazing class ever. I have shot with most of the students before. Matt made everyone shine. I really took alot home with the idea that I need to know if I hit my target or which way it went. I need more!
