This two-day course focuses on how to optimally train marksmanship at speed with a pistol. This course is not about tactics, although tactical application of all techniques taught will be discussed, but instead is about skill with the firearm. Your skill at shooting drives your tactics, and the ability to make a shot with precision, rapidly, and under pressure, is of paramount importance. Our goal is for every student to finish this class with a deeper understanding of how to construct their personal training in order to improve as efficiently as possible.

Topics Covered:

  • Fundamental principles of marksmanship at speed
  • Efficiency and consistency of weapons manipulation at speed
  • Movement principles for application of shooting technique
  • Technical efficiency and individual optimization of technique
  • Isolation of skills and training methodology for improvement
  • Technical experimentation in training
  • Complex drills for training skills in aggregate
  • Maximizing performance under pressure
  • Creating a feedback loop for maximizing efficiency of training

Course Prerequisites

  • Good health and a fitness level sufficient for strenuous physical activity. All our classes incorporate vigorous athletic movement.
  • All our classes require safe weapons handling at an unconsciously competent level of skill. This includes drawing from a holster, reholstering, reloads, and weapons safety during dynamic movement and under physical and mental stress. Flagrant or negligent unsafe actions will result in removal from a class without refund.

Equipment Requirements

  • Serviceable pistol of 9mm or larger caliber, minimum 3 magazines (6 for single stack guns), belt, holster and at a minimum two mag pouches capable of retaining weapon and magazines during strenuous movement. Minimum 1,000 rounds of ammunition, although more is recommended. Eye/ear protection for range. No Serpa holsters or soft nylon/leather holsters permitted in class.

Student Information

  • We send out two student emails for every class. You will receive one email approximately two weeks before the class date containing waivers, student information, range location, and amount of range fees where applicable. Please complete the waiver in a timely fashion, this helps us greatly for the class. You’ll receive a follow-up email the week of the class. If you don’t receive the first email, please check your spam folder. The emails will come from alittle@greybeardactual.com.

    Pistol Skill Development class

Posted by Jeremiah Williams on 15th Aug 2022

Recently took the Pistol Skill Development class in Elizabeth, CO. A fabulous class. Hugely valuable and great fun as well. The class is structured around how to organize your training, but there’s plenty of instruction in technique as well. I benefitted a lot from the individualized attention and suggestions. As clearly the least experienced shooter in the class, I also appreciated the encouragement both from Matt and the other students. Matt is a natural teacher. He not only has an excellent program but he delivers it very well.

    Pistol Skill Development weekend class

I came away with some pearls, renewed enthusiasm for dry firing, and a desire to go to the range more often. Matt has an amazing background, and the ability to draw you into his dedicated mindset. He explains the why and how-to of his approach to becoming more proficient. He welcomes questions and answers them all. The weekend was fun, instructive and uplifting, and I'm looking forward to signing up for the next class Matt and Angela schedule in Oregon. If you are serious about fine tuning your skills, this class is a must.

    Invested in Success

After a certain point, you begin to make assessments of where your time is best spent. More so when dollars are being exchanged for time with the intention of leaving with knowledge. How much time am I willing to devote to another percentage gain?

Matt makes that a simple proposition - what he has developed is a solid system through which skill development with a pistol evolves, is tested, and then pushed forward. So really what you are taking away is a system. Or if you already have a system, new ways to assess your own system and methods through a body of experience that is quite substantial.

I left with more questions of myself than anything else - whys that needed answering in terms of how and why I do the things I do in my own training and that of students. There were reasons there but it is better to understand directly what those are and Matt's methods help to tease that out all the while pushing you through ever-evolving drills and scenarios as a shooter.

Would recommend the class without reservation. Matt is an exceptional student of the craft himself and it shows.

Oh... practice your weak hand shooting.

Pistol Skill Development Class Temple, TX 11/2021

Matt is a profound instructor that can easily speak to LEO, civilian competitors/defenders and brand new shooters alike about training philosophy, technique and implementation. I was amazed at the way he could craft his instruction for each group type and individual to make them understand and improve. I highly suggest any of the Greybeard Actual Classes. You will not be disappointed.

    The Real Deal

Just finished a two day training weekend with Matt Little aka “Greybeard Actual” and it was a fantastic experience. Matt has a quiet, assured approach that encourages a sense of calm and focus. He is quite intellectual about the whole process and everything we did over the two days always led up to integrating more elements into the training process.

His style is to interact quietly with each person after observing them run a drill or exercise. If the group might benefit from his comments he’ll address the group as a whole. He is also very good about “atta boys” and encouraging everyone were appropriate.
It is interesting how a disparate group with varied shooting backgrounds and skills can come together and all benefit and grow.

It is interesting in retrospect just how intense and focussed the days were and yet there was never a sense of rushing to fit more in. Each day just flowed smoothly.

All participants benefitted as a result of his broad background as a police officer, special forces operator and competitor in USPSA. Each discipline runs from a different set of perspectives and needs and the ability to draw from each really benefits.

Matt is ably assisted by his wife and business partner Angela, and together they are seamless in creating a smooth running harmonious operation.

I left the range tired, but elated, with a greatly enhanced sense of what I need to do to continue to progress. I will be signing up for more classes in the future.

Great class and very welcoming atmosphere!

Posted by Mark on 12th Oct 2021

I had the chance to train with Matt a couple weeks ago in Oklahoma and decided that I really wanted to train with Matt again. Thankfully he had a class coming up in Colorado so I signed up! Matt is an excellent shooter, teacher, and has a gentle demeanor that welcomes shooters of most all experience levels (though this class is not for someone who just purchased a pistol). His wife Angela is equally as welcoming and very friendly. I got hurt in this class on the second morning straining a calf muscle, so don't forget to stretch! Matt and Angela were great in making sure I was taken care of and stable before continuing the class. I've received several e-mails from them in the following days just to make sure I'm alright, as well. I get the feeling when you train with Matt you're kind of joining a family and you inevitably make some friends as well, since it's such a positive and enjoyable atmosphere. I thought I was a pretty good shooter until I saw how much better I could become by learning from Matt, so if you're looking to really advance your abilities, this is one of the best ways to do it with one of the best training programs available. They won't be doing this forever, so if he's in your town I highly recommend taking a class and seeing for yourself!

    Will be back again

Thank you Matt and Angela for the fantastic weekend of instruction. If you are interested in taking your shooting to the next level, look no further. Matt has a wealth of knowledge and is able to articulate and break down everything he teaches so that anyone can understand. His instruction is very methodical and builds upon itself, starting from working isolated drills and applying them in combination drills. He not only tests your skills on manipulation setting strict par times but tested your processing speed making you think about the course of fire and the most efficient way to complete it. He also is very careful in watching the way you shoot making sure to diagnose issues he sees and giving you one on one feedback to help you improve your shooting. I cannot say thank you enough for all that I learned and took home to work on.

Excellent class! Matts professional and well-developed technical background shine through, along with his perspective as a martial artist, to bring together an unusually good treatment of technical skill development!

I was fortunate enough to attend the one day version of Matt’s Pistol Development Course. To say Matt is a great instructor is an understatement. This class is a must have for anyone who carries a pistol for defense and/or shoots competition. I will definitely be attending more of his courses in the future.
